LESSONS

Tioma Maloratsky has been teaching tango since 1996. He gives private and group lessons in New York City and the New York City tri-state area, including weekly group classes at Ensueño milonga on Mondays (see newyorktango.com for details). In his teaching, as in his dancing, Tioma focuses improvisational tango as opposed to choreography. He stresses movement principles and techniques learned firsthand from the traditional tango dancers in Buenos Aires, while also incorporating insights learned from his practice of Tai Chi Chuan and the Alexander Technique. A number of exercises are introduced to improve partner connection and freedom of improvisation. Integrating the old-school feeling for the dance with the modern approach to tango improvisation, Tioma teaches a large variety of individual elements and creative ways to connect them into longer sequences at will, thereby enabling a student's spontaneity and musical expression. With his experience at both leader's and follower's roles in tango, Tioma is able to effectively teach to couples and to individual students interested in either role. 

Depending on a student's interests and preferences, Tioma can focus on improvisation, choreographic possibilities, movement principles, quality of partner connection, historical and cultural aspects of tango dancing, a study of music for tango dancing and ways to play it at a milonga, as well as sharing his own process of using tango as means for physical and psychological development.
